After all we’ve been through and continue to endure, what do we really need? Is there some spiritual remedy that might breed resiliency in us and refresh our souls? I wonder if it isn’t a breathtaking vision of where everything is ultimately headed? This Sunday, we begin a new series called All Things New! It will also be our overarching theme over the next year. At the end of the Bible, through the prophetic imagination of the Apostle John, God declared “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5). To be sure, the full realization of this lies in the future, but we shouldn’t miss that it’s something God has already begun: “I am making everything new!” Even though heartbreak and disillusionment are all-too prevalent in our present experience, God has begun a comprehensive, cosmic renewal project of colossal scale. It’s rooted not in fantasy or wish fulfillment but in the historic truth of Jesus’ resurrection. And remarkably, we get to participate with God as he restores and re-beautifies our broken world. Each series throughout the ministry year is designed to help us better understand this hope-filled theme. As we immerse our heart’s imagination in the ultimate beauty of this future reality, we’ll be emboldened to live purposefully by faith now to participate in God’s work of making all things new—from the eradication of sorrow and restoring of justice, to the reconciliation of relationships, and the rewiring of culture, work, politics, science, education, finance, recreation and the arts. And in all this, living increasingly into the liberating reality of the new identity God offers to us in Christ. Join us this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and invite others!
