The God Behind the Stories: Finding Grace in the Old Testament

May 27, 2026

by Leo Schuster | Lead Pastor

This summer at City Church, we’re beginning a new series called The God Behind the Stories: Finding Grace in the Old Testament. Together, we’ll explore some of the Old Testament’s most compelling figures and familiar stories—not merely to study ancient lives, but to encounter the God behind them.

For many people, the Old Testament can feel confusing, intimidating, or disconnected from everyday life. Others may assume it’s mostly a collection of moral lessons about heroic people we should try to imitate. But Jesus taught his followers to read these stories differently. In Luke 24:27, he explained that all scripture ultimately points to him.

That means the Old Testament is not a collection of documents about human goodness or religious achievement. It is a seamless story about a holy and gracious God pursuing broken people with mercy, patience, justice, and relentless love.

Throughout the summer, each stand-alone sermon will help us see more clearly who God is—and how his grace meets us in the middle of our own fears, failures, questions, and longings.

Whether you’ve followed Christ for years, are exploring faith for the first time, or are considering re-engaging with church after time away, we hope this series will feel thoughtful, welcoming, and spiritually renewing. And we’d encourage you to bring a friend with you each Sunday. These ancient stories continue to speak powerfully to modern life, inviting us to encounter the grace of God in fresh ways.
