We have a unique opportunity to be part of something special – establish City Church’s long-term future home and make a gospel investment to renew our city that will yield fruit for generations to come. The reNEW Campaign is a season in the life of City Church where we are asking people to consider biblical generosity and to participate in an opportunity to secure funds needed to renovate City Church’s future home at 201 E. 9th Street.
Our Opportunity
We want to ponder the many ways that God renews us and how that impacts so many parts of our lives, including how we approach generosity.
We are thrilled to have purchased the property debt free, moving our focus to renovation. Our reNEW campaign is enabling us to move forward with all planned renovations, however we still have a need to cover the gap between the total cost and the campaign.
Through God’s radical generosity, we have an opportunity to give: an opportunity to renew an older church building, renew our commitment to City Church’s mission, and renew our hearts.
Renewal Starts Here
Since its inception, City Church has met for worship on Sundays at House of Blues in downtown Houston. With roughly 650 people who now call City Church their home, we long to maximize our mission through an enduring, visible, and physical presence.
Our future home in Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood at 201 E. 9th Street will enable us to serve the city throughout the week in many ways we currently cannot. It will also address the constraints we have faced at House of Blues in vital areas, such as our City Kids and City Youth ministries.
During the week, people will attend classes at a ministry training center, enjoy a conversation with someone who doesn’t share their faith in a coffee shop, or gather to serve the needs of the neighborhood and the city. The 24/7 visibility of the space will draw people to culturally relevant talks, art installations, and community events. It will be a place to gather with others, including our mission partners, to address important areas of brokenness in our city.
Renewal is All Around Us
The assurance of renewal is one of the fundamental promises of scripture. As Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
We all share portions of our life with others, but the call of the church is to live generously and openly with one another, as well as with the world beyond the walls of our congregation.
Contours of Renewal
Generosity is indissoluble from the concept of community, just as true and lasting renewal is inseparable from the promise of resurrection contained in the message of the gospel. We are co-workers in building a world of goodness, of belonging, and of purpose.
Giving is a Response to God's Grace
It’s not simply that the gospel gives us new life, but more pointedly, that it restores to us the original life that God intended in us. To be renewed is to discover who we really are in Christ Jesus. As this should be the goal of every community who claims to follow Jesus, we pray fervently that this will be a season of rediscovery, recommitment, and renewal.
1 Chronicles 29:14: But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.
Giving is an
Investment
Matthew 6:19
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Giving is a
Sacrifice
Luke 21: 1-4
As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Giving is
Worship
1 Chronicles 29:9
The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.
Our Opportunity
Giving is a response to God’s radical generosity. The new property is purchased and your gift will allow the new space to be transformed into a community space, a convergence of the sacred and secular, where people from different generations and walks of life encounter the gospel in a refreshing environment. Help us reNEW now.
reNEW Sermon Series
God is already at work now in this comprehensive, cosmic renewal project. He could, of course, accomplish this on his own. But instead he’s invited us to partner with him. This has always been the heartbeat of City Church. This series will explore biblical themes that animate City Church’s vision to renew Houston, imagine how our future home will enhance our ability to do this, and how each of us can participate.
