The horrific events in Charlottesville on Saturday left me heartbroken and deeply disturbed.
While I am passionate City Church steer clear of politics in order to keep the gospel central, racism transcends politics and is a gospel issue. White supremacy is not only a misguided movement, it is evil. It is antithetical to the way of Jesus, who came to “set the oppressed free” (Luke 4:18), who loved the poor, powerless, and ethnic minority. He shed his blood for every race (Revelation 5:9) that we might be incorporated into one new people characterized by his other-wordly love, humility and generosity. Where the church is guilty of prejudice, bigotry, and racism we must repent. To every person of color at City Church I want you to know how honored I am to be your pastor and how important you are to our church family.
