Why Do We Care about Art and Creativity?

by Joy Hanna, Worship Arts Director

It all started with creativity. The first five words of the Bible – “In the beginning God created”- reveal God as Creator; and an excellent Creator at that! If you’ve ever marveled at the pink and orange hues of an evening sky, it’s not difficult to understand Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”

The creation story goes on to name all things created by God: the heavens and earth, land and sea, sun, moon and stars, all living creatures and finally human beings, made in his very own likeness. Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s “handiwork” or in the original Greek, “poema,” which is where we get our English word “poem.” How beautiful!

As God’s workmanship and those made in our Creator’s image, we are mini creators. From Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel down to a four-year-old’s macaroni art, creativity is an enjoyable part of our world and being. At City Church, we seek to help creatives flourish in making beautiful things (music, poems, paintings, etc.) because whether sacred or secular, we see God, the ultimate Creator, in all art and artists!
