Sometimes we’re led to unexpected places …. like the launch of the City Church blog! Welcome, by the way.
My wife, Ellen, and I are thrilled and humbled the Lord has called us to start this new church in central Houston. We’re so grateful for the journey that has brought us here. Getting to start the RUF college ministry at SMU, Christ the King here in Houston and lead the East Side Congregation of Redeemer in New York City have all been part of God’s work of preparing us for this moment.
Our dream for City Church is that it will be a place where beauty finds her way into brokenness. It won’t be a church just for ourselves but for those who don’t share our faith or aren’t sure what they believe. Everyone will be welcome and will safely be able to explore the possibility of faith and the implications of it. All questions of belief/unbelief will be taken seriously and addressed respectfully. We’re not so much interested in creating a great church as we are a church that will help make Houston a greater city. We will love the city to life! And by God’s grace, we’ll do this by helping people integrate their faith into their work so they see it as a sacred calling instead of merely a job. We plan to love and serve the poor and those marginalized by the brokenness around us. We want City Church to be a haven for artists—It is important to us to celebrate the arts as a vital recovery of beauty. More than anything: We want to help people discover the beauty of the Lord that alone satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart.
Being part of a church plant is an adventure like none other. We happen to think it’s the most exciting thing on the planet. Come and see for yourself!
